For the birds…part two

June 17, 2014

birdhouseThe birdhouse is finally almost finished. It just needs a coat of paint and it will be ready to install. We were all really delighted when the copper drainage pipe spilled its first shower of water into the bowl and we can’t wait to see if the birds like this added bath feature or if they will feel shy and prefer to wait until the ivy grows down over to create a natural shower enclosure. Throughout this project, we touched on an array of topics including green roof construction, water conservation, urban heat islands, rooftop habitats, and air pollution.

We also looked back through history at different  roofing materials and we surmised that many modern age advancements offer us convenience at a huge environmental and social cost. Most importantly, we employed critical thinking skills throughout and this is, by far, the most important aspect of a Montessori education. Well done, Junior Scientists. Next week, we will be rewarded with some Magic and Science demonstrations.
