Montessori casas are home to children ranging in age from two to six years. This setting fosters a child’s maturation over the course of the three year cycle. In the beginning, the youngest children are guided by those slightly older and as they become more masterful and independent, they begin to take on greater responsibility for themselves, their environment and eventually for others who are younger. The mixed aged setting also allows for peer guidance, correction and modelling and we feel this is an essential key to the development of character. Children are encouraged to “tap a friend” for help because they will learn so differently through another child’s experience than they will if they believe that the adults in the room hold all the answers. It is truly beautiful to see a third year child whom you remember coming in the door in the past crying for their parent turn to lend a supportive hand to a young child who has just arrived.
