The Knitting Project

December 22, 2013

hallOne of our students was recently shown French knitting (sometimes referred to as corking) in early December. She was so keen she dedicated a part of her day each day to knitting a mat for her cat. After a few weeks, the knitting reached the depth of the second floor stairwell. A mere few days later it extended the whole length of the hallway. On the last day of school, Melody knitted the strand together into a coiled mat so the child could take it home to give it to her cat for Christmas. This was a fine example of a child’s engagement with their work and while she utilized measuring, planning and other executive functioning skills to complete her project, what she really took away was a sense of satisfaction in completing it and that is a work habit that will last a lifetime.
