Our Adopted Tree

IMG_5107The school has adopted a black walnut tree in Fred Hamilton Park. Our science club went to visit it for the first time last week and as we sat beside it (because it is still small), we spoke about how we are both similar and different to trees and what our experience as a species on the tree of life means. The children were quick to point out that as a top predator we have to act responsibly but generally, they didn’t feel like we were doing such a great job of that. When we got back to school, I asked the kids to each write something about themselves that we will send in a letter to the donor whose husband the tree was planted in honour of. He was an educator and environmental enthusiast so we feel our group is a good match. It is our intention to look after the tree for the whole summer as a kind of large living class “pet”.
