The Ugly Stick

RoydenEach Friday’s afternoon conference is devoted to show and share. This is an opportunity for children to bring in something from home to share with their friends. It must be an object from nature or something that tells a story about themselves and it presents a context for children to learn how to listen, tell a story, ask questions and share ideas. We have shared bird nests, cello performances, a 2000 year old coin, ceremonial demonstrations, railway spikes, a new baby brother and countless bones, shells and photographs. This week, one young man brought in an ugly stick from Newfoundland. This is a traditional instrument made from a mophead adorned with various household and toolshed items which are played at “mummerings” or kitchen parties.
